Once you have finished studying for SC-900, the last thing to prepare for is the exam itself. Picking one similarly named Microsoft security product after another on an unfamiliar screen for 45 minutes, it is easy to miss things you actually know because the clock is running. In practice, points are lost in the exam room less often to gaps in knowledge than to fumbling with the interface, poor time management, and misunderstandings about how scoring works.
This post wraps up our SC-900 study series. It covers the exam's time structure, question types, scoring, the October 2026 skills outline revision and exam languages, and the online exam process, based on Microsoft's official guidance (checked in October 2026). For the exam scope and study order, start with The Complete Azure SC-900 Exam Guide.

The Exam's Time Structure at a Glance
| Item | Detail | |------|------| | Exam duration | 45 minutes (the same for all Fundamentals exams) | | Seat time | 65 minutes (includes reviewing instructions, the candidate agreement, and leaving comments afterward) | | Number of questions | Not published (Microsoft exams typically have 40–60, but it varies by exam) | | Breaks | Allowed at any time, but the clock keeps running (5 minutes for breaks are built into the exam time) | | After a break | You cannot return to questions you saw before the break | | Access to Microsoft Learn | Not available on Fundamentals exams | | Exam languages | 13 languages, including English, Korean, Japanese, Spanish, and Portuguese (Brazil) | | Results | Usually within minutes of finishing; in your Learn profile within 24 hours |
Forty-five minutes is shorter than it sounds. The exact number of SC-900 questions is not published, but it is safest to prepare as if you have about a minute per question. The single most important strategy is not to linger on any one question from the start.

How Exam Day Flows
For an online exam, you finish check-in before your appointment time, wait to be connected to a proctor, go through the instruction screens and the agreement, and then start the exam itself. When you finish, you can leave comments, and results usually arrive within minutes.
!How SC-900 exam day flows
The exam screen shows the time remaining and the number of questions remaining, and you start a break with the break icon in the left navigation pane. Learning where these are in the sandbox beforehand means you won't waste time hunting around the screen during the exam.

A Preview of the Question Types
To protect exam security, Microsoft does not say in advance which question formats appear on a given exam. Instead, it offers an exam sandbox where you can try the same screens, instructions, and question types as the real exam. The main types you can try in the sandbox are below.
| Type | What you do on screen | How to approach it | |------|------|------| | Multiple choice | Select one or more of the options | Check how many to choose first, as in "choose two" | | Drag and drop | Drag items into the right slots | Check the instructions to see whether an item can be used more than once | | Hot area | Select an answer in an area of a table or image, or from a drop-down | For sentence-completion items, reread the whole completed sentence before confirming | | Build list | Pick items and arrange them in the correct order | Some items may not belong in the list at all | | Active screen | Build your answer by changing drop-downs or option buttons on a screen | Change only the elements that need changing | | Case studies | Read a long scenario and answer several questions about it | Read the questions first, then look up only the parts you need |
How to Read SC-900 Questions
Rather than asking for a service name directly, SC-900 questions often describe a situation such as "an organization has this requirement" and ask you to pick the right Microsoft solution. The answer choices put similarly named products side by side, such as Defender for Cloud and Defender for Cloud Apps, or Conditional Access and ID Protection, so first note in the question what is being protected (people, devices, data, or infrastructure) and only then read the choices.
In formats that ask you to judge several statements as "Yes" or "No," treat each statement as a separate question. The answer to one statement does not affect the next, and a statement containing words such as "always," "all," or "automatically" is false if even one exception exists.
Exam tip: Questions you mark for review can be reopened from the review screen at the end. But once you start a break, you cannot return to questions you saw before it, so settle your marked questions before taking one.

What You Must Know About Scoring
| Rule | What it means | What to do in the exam room | |------|------|------| | Pass with 700 or more on a 1–1,000 scale | It is a scaled score, so it does not equal 70% correct | Don't fixate on calculating your percentage | | No penalty for wrong answers | Incorrect answers don't deduct points | Never leave a question blank, even if you don't know it | | Partial credit on multi-part questions | Usually one point per correct part | Fill in the parts you are sure of first | | Some questions are unscored | You cannot tell which ones | Treat every question as if it counts | | Section bars on the score report | Sections have different numbers of questions, so you can't add the bars up to work out pass or fail | Use them only to find your weak areas |
The passing line is a scaled score because question difficulty differs from one set of questions to another. Microsoft explains that easier sets of questions require more points to pass, and more difficult sets require fewer.

A 45-Minute Time Strategy
Decide on your time plan before you walk in, so you don't waver during the exam.
Step 1 (right at the start): On the instruction screens, find where the time remaining and question count are displayed. If you practiced in the sandbox, this takes seconds.
Step 2 (first pass): Answer the questions where the answer is clear right away. If you are stuck for more than 30 seconds, pick the most plausible answer, mark the question for review, and move on. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so never leave one blank.
Step 3 (review): Go back to your marked questions from the review screen and work through them again. Change your first answer only when you find clear grounds to do so.
Step 4 (wrap-up): Confirm that zero questions are unanswered, then end the exam.
The most common mistake is spending several minutes on one or two hard questions early on and then rushing to guess on the last ones. Make finishing one full first pass your top priority.

The Skills Outline Revision and Exam Languages
The SC-900 skills outline was revised on October 21, 2026. Microsoft updates the English exam first and usually applies changes to localized exams, such as Korean, about eight weeks later. So if you take the exam in another language, it may still follow the previous outline for a few weeks after the revision.
This was a small revision, with only two items marked "Minor." The identity types item now names workload identities explicitly. In the Defender XDR items, threat intelligence is listed under the name Microsoft Threat Intelligence. If the exam is not offered in your preferred language, you can request 30 extra minutes, but SC-900 is offered in many languages, so most candidates won't need this.
Because the difference between the two outlines is small, you prepare the same way whichever one applies. Just remember that new and old names (Defender TI, Azure AD, and so on) refer to the same features if they show up mixed in the answer choices.

Online Exam Checklist
Online exams taken from home or the office run on Pearson VUE's OnVUE. A proctor watches you and your room through your webcam and microphone, and the session is recorded.
Before you book, run the Pearson VUE system test to confirm your PC, webcam, and network meet the requirements You can check in from 30 minutes before to 15 minutes after your appointment time, and the process takes about 15 minutes Have a valid government-issued ID ready, and confirm beforehand that the name on your Microsoft certification profile exactly matches the name on your ID Take the exam alone in a walled space with a door that closes; no one else may enter the room during the exam Disconnect any extra monitors and turn them away, and turn off any other computers nearby Keep your phone out of arm's reach, but close enough to hear it if the proctor calls Even if you take the exam in another language, greeters and proctors mostly communicate in English Some antivirus software can cause performance problems, so consider turning off scanning during the exam

What to Try Before the Exam
In the last week before the exam, getting comfortable with the exam format pays off more than adding new material.
| Resource | What you get from it | |------|------| | Exam sandbox | Hands-on with the real exam screens, question types, marking for review, and navigation (not real questions) | | Microsoft Learn Practice Assessment | Free practice questions in a style and difficulty similar to the real exam (not the same questions) | | Exam Readiness Zone videos | Microsoft's exam preparation videos linked from the official study guide | | Look-alike services comparison | A final check of the product pairs that appear as each other's wrong answers | | SC-900 practice exam | Timed practice that shows your weak areas and how you pace yourself |
