AWS certifications remain valid for only three years from the date you earn them. More people than you'd expect list a certification on their resume or LinkedIn and let years go by without realizing this.
Three Ways to Recertify
AWS officially recognizes three paths to recertification.

Retake the same exam. The simplest option, but don't expect the content to match what you saw three years ago — AWS periodically updates exam content as its services evolve, so you're preparing for the current version, not the one you originally took.
Pass a higher-level certification instead. If you hold a Foundational or Associate-level certification, passing a higher-level exam in the same track (like Professional) satisfies the recertification requirement automatically. Someone holding Solutions Architect Associate who passes Solutions Architect Professional gets both credentials renewed with a single exam fee.
Use the free Recertification Assessment. A shorter online assessment through your AWS Certification account — fewer questions, unproctored, about 40 minutes. It opens three months before your certification expires and reflects current exam content, just like the full exam. No testing center booking required, which makes it especially useful if your schedule is tight.
Beyond these three, AWS doesn't recognize alternatives like continuing-education credits.
The Most Common Trap: Missing the "Three Months Before" Window
One condition on the free assessment trips up a lot of people. It only becomes available starting three months before expiration — and plenty of people, unaware of that rule, log in a month before expiry only to be told the assessment isn't open yet. They end up forced to book the full paid exam instead. Setting a calendar reminder at the two-years-nine-months mark from your original exam date avoids this entirely.
Don't Miss the Discount
The Benefits section of your AWS Certification account often includes a 50% discount voucher applicable to recertification or your next exam. It's worth checking that tab before booking anything, since it directly cuts your fee.
